Reethi Rah Resort was created 26 years ago, when it started life as little more than a sand bar. It was planted with palms and other tropical vegetation, and allowed to mature - the result being one of the most idyllic of the Maldivian resort islands.

Reethi Rah is one of a trio of islands within a protective reef. They are Madivaru, Reethi Rah and Summer Island. Reethi Rah means "beautiful Island", but it's original Dhiveli name is Medufinolu - "Middle Island".

The year 2002 saw our second visit to Reethi Rah, six years after our first. We were worried that it would have been changed in some way, amidst rumours of a five star upgrade. Much to our relief, and seemingly everyone else's, the island was as wonderful as 1996. Even Zareer, our waiter from our last visit, was still there and looked after us as well as ever.

Sadly, the latest news on the five star upgrade is that it is now underway, basically destroying one of, if not the, last "Desert Island" resorts in the Maldives. We really intended to return to Reethi Rah one day, but that isn't going to happen now.
